Hmmm, I don't know... I googled it and found this, you could give it a try.

"it may sound stupid but i swear it works
connect itouch/phone
hold power and home button for 10 seconds
let go of power after 10 seconds
KEEP HOLD OF HOME BUTTON
for about a minute
it hurts your finger, but then the screen flashes white and it loads in itunes!!!"

To reset Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Someone gave it to me because of this problem. I was wondering if this is a major problem? Maybe the battery? I think it's a 1st gen Ipod Touch.
I bought one of the new Nano's early 2009 and in about august, it started doing the things you mentioned. Like, my pc wouldn't recognise it, it wouldn't charge and after the battery life that it had ran out it was just completely dead.

Thankfully it was still under warrently and apple was really up to the mark when it came to the whole process of getting a replacement. I sent it and a week later I had an new nano delivered

Is it still under warrently? I believe what you can do is go to the apple site and they'll be a page where you can enter the serial # from the back of the ipod and it'll tell you whether or not it's still under warrenty.

Peace!
