I had one for a week. I returned it after thoroughly comparing it to my friend's iPhone 3g. The 3G was better in everything that I use my phone for everyday. The hardware of the G1 was a big problem for me. The screen does not seem very durable, and there's this chin on the right side of the keyboard that doesn't let you type comfortably. Android has been skinned since then to be a very nice interface but originally it was pretty ugly and sparse.
I have very good 3G service here so using AT&T wasn't a bad thing for me but I've heard a lot of horror stories about their network speeds. You should check to see which carrier has the best connection in your area because using any smart phone on EDGE is a pretty lousy experience. |

Advantages of the G1 is that it runs on an open os. That means you can in theory do more things with it. For example, if you wanted to run a third party VOIP software to make calls you would be able to. An iPhone won't allow that since it would mean your cell provider can't make money on those calls. A developer can also make applications for the phone without needing the phone maker's permission or having to pay them a fee. If you wanted to make an application for the iPhone, you'd need approval and you'd have to pay a fee to Apple's app store. Some apps are banned from being on the iPhone. You can't ban apps on a G1 because developers don't have to go through the cell provider or phone manufacturer.
The iPhone has many advantages like a better interface, more applications and looks nice. If you really like the iPhone, the G1 may not be for you... it isn't really meant to be another iPhone. The hardware is fairly basic. If you are intent on using android, then there are a bunch of newer models coming out that have better hardware... I'd wait for those. |
