Default First impressions of Windows 7

So i finally got my copy of windows 7 home premium yesterday and got it up and running last night. So here's my first impression and some information for people considering the upgrade or retail versions of 7.

My system:
Gigabyte p35-ds3l Motherboard
Intel Core2Quad Q6600
Gigabyte Nvidia 8800GT
Soundblaster X-fi extreme music
4 Gb of Corsair dual channel ram at 800mhz
250gb Seagate sata hard drive
Sata dvd/cd combo drive
21.6" samsung widescreen
550 watt ultra power supply

The installer was a bit faster than windows xp's and asked most of the setup questions before installing so you don't have to sit at the pc awnsering questions for an hour during the setup. There is however a delay at two places during the install where you will see a spinning cursor for about 5 minutes.

Right off the bat, windows had drivers for every piece of hardware in my computer. The only item that it had issues with was my 6 year old wireless card. However once windows update ran it offered a driver for that as well. Screen resolution was set properly and the os booted up quickly. After everything is booted up it is using about 900mb of ram and very little processor unlike vista that used 1.5gb of ram and had my cpu spiking all the time as well as constant harddrive activity.

Appearance wise it looks similar to vista but is a bit more refined and streamlined, there are more backgrounds and sound themes. You will notice that you are not clicking on nearly as many security warnings as you did with vista. IE runs faster than firefox and programs open almost instantly. My computer boots faster and responds much faster than it did on xp or vista. Sound quality is also a lot better, my 5.1 surround sound is a lot clearer and amplified.

Installing programs was easy and hassle free, all of my normal programs like vlc, utorrent, firefox, adobe photoshop, avg, maintenance software and several games installed perfectly and run smoothly. Even my Nikon camera software that was not meant for 7 runs fine.

All in all i would say that microsoft has done something right for the first time since xp or win2000. I'd highly recommend this operating system to anyone who is using vista or who held onto xp instead of upgrading to vista.

Yeah!

I'm a .NET software developer, we develops a software that was Windows Vista certified, and one or two months ago we had to certify it for Windows 7, so we installed the last RTM and the toolkit for pass the certification, but besides we played with it a little bit and... geez... that is what Vista was supposed to be!!! it's great, specially if you have to suffer Windows Vista every day like me hahaha

I tried it when the beta was out and it worked well except for an internet problem. I've never bought an os on the first day before either but i made an exception in this case because i needed to upgrade badly. I was still running XP as i avoided vista like the plague.

Vista was meant to be a phase transition from an upgrade to the NT model.

I also did the jump from xp to windows 7... although to tell the truth I did use vista for one day on my new computer until I downloaded the 7100 build for win7 and installed that... only had two issues that caused me problems but they are solved..

Thanks for this, I was on the fence about getting it but after reading this went ahead and did. I'm on it right now and it's great so far.

I may be doing the xp -> 7 jump soon as well. I tried the beta and it seemed pretty ok.

Yeah, my jump was from XP -> 7 too. I had some trouble with my audio drivers, but I seem to be fully up and running now. It is so much faster than XP, it's great.

My sister told me about it, so she wants me to persuade her whether or not she should get it. as she's running Vista at the moment. I would persuade her to do it, but... she really doesn't have any particular issues with Vista, and I secretly want it for my computer, but I have a fairly outdated computer, so I probably wouldn't be able to run it. It's around 6 years old now. Any thoughts on whether I should just get a new custom made computer?

With so many positive thoughts about Windows 7, I might have to persuade her a bit more though.

It might run ok on that machine. I'm currently running it "virtually" within XP (using VirtualBox) on a 7 year old mid-level PC and even with two operating systems running at the same time, 7 is still usable.
