Default Rick Santorum on the Separation of Church and State

In an interview this week, Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum said the following:

"I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute."

"The First Amendment means the free exercise of religion and that means bringing people and their faith into the public square."

Santorum also said that the 1960 speech by President Kennedy that he would not impose his Catholic beliefs on others made him "want to throw up".

Discuss.

You can view his complete remarks in this video (the part about the role of religion in government starts at the 13:00 mark):

Thinking of him being president is the thing that makes me throw up! I hate how he's trying to force his religious views on all of us.

I think Lewis Black said it best: "Rick Santorum should be electroshocked for his own good."

Religion has no place in the US government and anyone who wants to institute it should be hung for treason.

That last part is a bit much. I do agree that religion (of any kind) has no place in government, though.

The way I see it, the founders made it painfully clear that god does not belong in government. Anyone who tries to change this fundamental rule of society is a traitor. Once you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Best to nip it in the bud right away.

Frankly, I find him and his followers terrifying. It seems that they want a theocracy.

I initially was set to pounce on this, but upon further reading I realized that Santorum misinterpreted Kennedy's entire speech because of its first sentence.

I guess that doesn't change that Santorum is a rather ignorant individual, regardless of his intentions.

I'm sure Jesus would see plenty of problems in bishops getting special treatment! lol!! His teachings are about equality of all men more than anything, if I'm not mistaken

I love the fact people have been calling out the media for being puppets r/e the Ron Paul censorship.. it's awesome. Because the paper I read had done it too.. not cool

I even remember I'd made a negative impression of Ron Paul, some years back, and I realize now it would have been because of such selective reporting. But it's awesome we have someone like Ron Paul who, even if he's not perfect, is making a great example of how to be, you know, honest and all at the same time as successful. It's beautiful.

edit: also this is relevant

I'd say having an entitlement based on religious technicality, to have a say in government matters, is! I guess it depends on who you ask though, ultimately.

Yeah this is what I meant.

But of course, Jesus' lessons are outdated, as I've said on here already. Democracy, in the modern world, doesn't make as much sense as it did back then.

We probably can't get rid of the Queen because of the tourism industry!

If god gave humanity free will, shouldn't man support it as well?

Not sure what you're on about here. The bishops were not getting special treatment because, in the Lords, everyone has been given some sense of unaccountable entitlement to have a say in government policy. That's part of how the government system in the UK works. If you give everyone in the place an unaccountable entitlement to influence government policy then nobody in that place is getting special treatment.
It seems odd to say that if every member of an elite group have unaccountable entitlements that none of them are getting special treatment.
