I'm not going to be too ambitious this time; I'm just going to get through it and try not to look like too much of an idiot. Fingers crossed.

Ah there is an Amnesty International thing at my college as well. First meeting was meant to be today but it got cancelled so it'll be on next week.
I think meetings are quite a good way for exposure therapy since if you feel too nervous to say anything, you can just sit there and not say anything and nobody will notice much. So all the best to you

Cool... that was the first group I ever joined. Let us know how it goes! If you become part of a letter writing campaign, maybe you could post the info here and others can write letters as well.

Okay, so I showed up, it wasn't that bad. The leader of AI Belfast was there to deliver a brief introduction which only took about about 15-20 minutes. After that they had a campaign for people to sign up for next Thursday, but unfortunately I have classes during that time and couldn't come along. Oh well, I'm sure something else will show up.
Afterwards I ended up in a group of about six people who were talking, since they were handing out free tea and biscuits. I didn't really say much except to answer questions like what I studied and where I lived, although I did manage to make one joke that elicited a laugh. One of the girls main some comment about me being quiet, which sort of put me off bit (she was being nice though). I was there for about fifteen minutes or so before I started getting nervous and made an exit and just mumbled something like 'excuse me' before leaving... *sigh* But I'm not going to beat myself up over my failures and give up like I usually do. I'll try to find the same guys again next time and try to say more. Anyway, in all it was a pretty good effort by my standards, even if most people wouldn't bat an eyelid at it.

Sounds to me like it didn't go too bad. Good to hear that you'll be going again as well. |

Update: I have been going a few weeks now and am comfortable there at least. I can't say I have built up any kind of rapport with anyone there except for one girl who always greets me for some reason. It seems she wants to talk more but I am not very good at it and the conversation ends pretty soon.
Anyway, we are all supposed to be going out to a bar next week as part of a 'bonding' thing. That is pretty scary for me, I haven't decided whether I will go or not. I've not really ever been to a bar before. Update: Okay, screw it, I'm going! I'm 23 years old, I should go to a damn bar once in a while. Do I need to wear anything? Does being at a bar at 8:00 require dressing up a bit? I can't actually drink anything because my medication will put me to sleep if I do, but meh, I'll just drive there and use that as an excuse.
