HAS anyone heard about the new Large Hadron Collider, the CERN LHC as it's known. So far, I know it sends particles around the "dohnut" at very high speeds using powerful magnets, before they smash into other particles to find out what it breaks up into. Am I correct?

if anyone knows all about the new accelerator, what kind of particles they're smashing, or what they're trying to achieve please post! :)

EDIT: Didn't know where to put this, but it said word geek, so I though mayby some of u guys heard bout it.

I heard the graphics are better on the ps3 but I like a lot of the rpg style games the 360 offers. The 360 is also cheaper. But the 360 doesn't have blue ray. Which in your opinion is better.

Microsoft's chief software architect Ray Ozzie was discussing smartphones at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference earlier. Apparently, we just don't get what is and what isn't important in the smartphone battle, because according to him, apps don't really matter.

We're focusing too much on the number or type of apps available on the different platforms, according to Ozzie:

All the apps that count will be ported to every one of them. It's a completely different situation from the PC market, where software's built to run on a Windows or a Mac. Mobile apps require very little development, so it's much easier to bring them onto every platform.

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie. You're just jealous that the Windows Mobile Market doesn't have enough fart apps, aren't you? Or did you watch that App Lab video one too many times?

Assassin's Creed 2 is set in an era of history famous for the creation of beautiful art and master inventions, a fitting backdrop for a game that leaps beyond the achievements of both its predecessor and some other vaunted works.

Two years ago, the first Assassin's Creed sold millions while evoking grumbles that its free-running, pickpocketing, killing and escaping routine was too, well, routine, repeating a formula with little variation from the first slice of hero Altair's sword to the last. What some saw as a shallow game, I described as a short-session game masquerading as an epic, a game that discouraged lengthy play sessions but rewarded the occasional indulgence of its strong core gameplay loop. It was more of a Pac-Man than a Zelda.

yikes too long article to post. To read more click here

Facebook is goddamn everywhere. It's on my phone, my computer, my Xbox 360, even my alarm clock. And now, the PS3 3.10 update allows it to take root in the PS3, just like we thought.

The update is actually pretty cool, as far as such things go, peppering status updates with Trophy information, purchases, and other in-game data that the developers can choose to include. It's a pretty minor update, really, but also includes better photo browsing and, um, different colored PlayStation Network profiles. Sweet, I guess.

The thread says it all. What are the games that you really really want to play or own but they seem to escape your grasp. This may be due to money issues or the game being on a different console, or other issues.

One game I don't think I'll ever get to play is Chrono Trigger. I dont have a SNES or a DS. I have a playstation but Chrono Trigger was never released for the PS1 in the UK. I've played a couple of hours of it on an emulator but I don't want to rely on them too much, if I had a 70 hour game save I'd be horrified if it dissapeared. My computer's stupid like that. Ah, the sorrow :roll

Then again, there's always Chrono Cross :idea

A device to help people sleep has been put on the market, after the inventor designed it to help beat her insomnia.

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...s-on-sale.html

Kate Evans, 25, designed the LightSleeper to help tackle her sleepless nights while a university student.

Initial trials have been so successful the device is being considered by the NHS, which has spent £36 million on sleeping pills this year, a 20 per cent annual rise.

The LightSleeper, which costs £125, works by moving a soothing blue light across the ceiling. Ms Evans said: "It moves your eyes along a line, relaxing your brain.

"This helps you drift off. Reading a book can make you more alert but this makes you switch off. It's the first device that offers a simple, drug-free and natural way of falling asleep for this who find it hard."

Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert who has tested the product, said: "This could really help people who have difficulty relaxing."

Ms Evans said she had the idea for the device while studying design at Central Lancashire university, where she gained a first class degree.

Her invention was taken up by Quincom, an innovation company, which has large orders for it from Japan.

Ms Evans, who is a design director of the Oxford-based firm, added: "I used to suffer badly from insomnia and sleep only three hours a night.

"I was shocked to find how many people have such problems and how big the market is for sleeping pilss. There was a big need for an alternative."

The device is on sale at lightsleeper.co.uk and Boots.com plan to market it. A spokesman for Boots said: "It's a new way of helping people relax."

Five Best Online Backup Tools
Nov 15, 2009, 9:00am, by Jason Fitzpatrick

Source: http://lifehacker.com/5405041/five-b...e-backup-tools

Local backup is a useful and necessary part of securing your data against catastrophe, but with the advent of broadband and inexpensive online storage, you've got little reason to not backup critical files to the cloud, as well.

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite online backup solutions. Now we're back to share the five most popular solutions Lifehacker readers use to back up their data online and keep it secure in the event that some unforeseen event at their on-site location—fire, flood, theft, someone casts Chain Lighting in the server room—wipes out their local backup.

Note: When contenders in the Hive Five have a free option, we've listed that first, followed by the first level of paid backup they provide. For additional levels and packages click on the name of the backup service for more information.

For additional information on both both Hive Five contenders and other online backup solutions, you can check out this comprehensive comparison chart.

CrashPlan (Windows/Mac/Linux/Open Solaris, Basic [No online storage] Free, Premium [Unlimited] $4.50 per month)
CrashPlan takes an interesting approach with their backup software. You can download the software for free and use it to perform local backups on your computer and home network as well as back up data to a friend's computer if they are also running CrashPlan (so it's sort of off-site if a friend's running it). They don't offer any free introductory plans for online storage like most other online backup providers, but their rate for an unlimited personal account is on par with other providers. The software is very user friendly, and even if you're not sure if you want to commit to paying for an online backup service, it's worth a download just to automate your local backups. If your data goes kaput, you can restore it using the software or you can order a hard copy of your data.

Mozy (Windows/Mac, Basic [2GB] Free, Home Premium [Unlimited] $4.95 per month)
Mozy is an automated backup solution. Once you install the Mozy client on your computer, it will back up any files you specify at the frequency you specify. Mozy can back up files while they are open—so that huge presentation you've been working on for the last few hours will be backed up even if you're still working with it. Mozy also backs up based on file changes, only uploading the portion of a file that has changed and not the entire file all over again (meaning quicker incremental backups after the initial backup). Mozy stores previous versions of your files for easy restoration, and in addition to restoring all your files by downloading them, you can also order a backup on physical media for a fee.

Dropbox (Windows/Mac/Linux, Basic [2GB] Free, Pro [50GB] $9.99 per month)
Once you install Dropbox, a folder, appropriately called "My Dropbox", is placed in the Documents area of your computer. Anything you put into this folder will be synced with your Dropbox account. You can sync files, share files by making the folder they are in public, and restore a previous verison of your file—Dropbox keeps a change log going back 30 days. All your files are also accessible via the Dropbox web site, which is great for those times you're at a computer where you don't have Dropbox installed, but you still want to access a document. If you want to sync a folder without putting it directly inside the main My Dropbox folder, you can do that with a little elbow grease, too. Dropbox doesn't have an unlimited option like the rest, but if all you want to back up is your most important document, it certainly works as off-site backup, and it provides data redundancy on every computer you install it on.

Jungle Disk (Windows/Mac/Linux, Pricing: $2 per month + Per GB Fees)
Jungle Disk takes a different approach to backup on several different levels. Rather than offering a flat rate pricing for unlimited storage, Jungle Disk operates on a fee system. You pay $2 a month per account plus a fee per GB of data used. The fee structure per GB is currently: $0.15 for storage, $0.10 for upload, and $0.17 for download. On the upside, in the face of fee structure you can use your Jungle Disk as a networked disk drive in addition to a remote backup location. Jungle Disk is great at backup, but you can also use it with any application you'd like that can write to a network drive. A bonus for small-volume users is that for small amounts of data, you'll pay less than other backup solutions per month and have a lot more flexibility with how you use your remote storage.

Carbonite (Windows/Mac, Unlimited Storage $4.58 per month)
Carbonite is the other contender in this week's Hive Five that doesn't offer a free basic account with teaser storage. They have a simple pricing plan: $54.95 for a year of unlimited storage from a single computer. Like Mozy, Carbonite also offers block-level incremental backup to speed up the backup process. You can access your files through a web-based interface when you are away from home, and you can use the Carbonite application to restore all or some of your files at any time. Carbonite does not provide a hard copy of your data upon request, so get ready for some heavy downloading time if you've got a lot of data you need to restore.

Now that you've had a chance to look over the five most popular contenders for best online backup

Hi all,

I'd really appreciate some advice with this one, I'm not sure I should be worried, but I think I'd better at least ask to be safe. Sorry about my the long post btw.

Long story short, when I woke up today I switched on the PC and there was this icon in 'my documents' titled 'remote desktop connection' which wasn't there before. I opened it up and it seemed to be a link to another computer, by which another user could look at my desktop. Am I paranoid? This is bad, right?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the cyber equivalent of somebody sneaking into my room in the middle of the night, reading my diary, touching my stuff, robbing my life savings and leafing through my 'special interest magazines'? If so, then I'm raging. I forked out £40+ for a decent spyware blocker (Norton), this is the exact sort of thing that makes me paranoid about owning an internet connection.

The very idea that some smelly, corpulent cheesy-fingered hacker has been sat in his parent's basement, invading my closely-guarded privacy is bad enough, but worse still is the fact that I kept my password details for internet banking in a word file in the exact same folder where that 'remote connection' icon appeared. Yes, I know, I'm an idiot.

I have now deleted the document with my bank details in, deleted the mysterious icon, and checked my bank account, it seems okay but I just wanted to know if you think there's a problem. Nobody else uses this computer but me, and even though I was drunk last night and don't remember, I doubt I would have been responsible for putting that icon on my desktop. It looks like it just appeared out of nowhere. I have ID fraud protection on my credit card etc, but still, you understand me worrying right? I'd rather not take any risk of getting stitched up, especially not by some unwashed hacker who'll probably be using both my name AND my readies to browse illegal kiddy-fiddler sites or something.

I am a paranoid enough person at the best of times, and trust me I'm having kittens about this. I've heard about ID theft etc. I know it's an odd problem, but some help or reassurance would be very welcome.

Thanks! :)

Through Google or any of those search engines? I went to elaborate on one of my comments by quoting myself and accidently deleted my original post. I really don't feel like re-writing it because it was rather lengthy, and I was quite inspired at the time and, well... don't think I can word it as poignantly as I did.

Any help would be appreciated... as I'd like to repost it.

Thanks.

BioWare has updated the holonet page on the Star Wars: The Old Republic website with more information on the Imperial Agent, the recently revealed character class for the upcoming MMO.

Revealed last Friday, the Imperial Agent is a powerful player in the Empire's ploy for universal power. Whether working in the shadows with his or her trusty sniper rifle or boldly calling in an orbital strike, the Imperial Agent has the full power of the Empire behind them at all times, in exchange for their undying loyalty.
