My dad takes the 'quit being a whiner and handle your sh*t' approach, which I like much better.

Wow, that's the inverse of my mother. She says, "Nothing is wrong with you, you're just creative. You want some meatloaf?" My father will understand, since he has huge issues, but the most that will come out of him will be, "Yeah, eat the meatloaf."
