"The "increased suicidal ideation" side effect can be explained like this. The patient is already suicidal from depression. The patient may even have a suicide plan planned out but lack the motivation and energy to carry it out. Then comes along Prozac. It starts giving the depressed person energy BEFORE it starts working on your patient's suicidal thoughts and moods. So now this depressed suicidal patient on Prozac has the energy to carry out his or her plans of suicide. This only happens in few patients but you as your child's parent and his/her doctor MUST keep a close tab on your child before the anti-depressant mood action kicks in. This time frame is about 4-8 weeks. After that if the medicine is working, the patient will lose his/her suicidal thoughts and the depression will begin to lift making the patient return to normal." - myself
